hum to raat ka matlab samjhen khwab, sitare, chand, charagh aage ka ahwal wo jaane jis ne raat guzari ho

arz-e-ahwal ko gila samjhe kya kaha main ne aap kya samjhe the mention of my condition was a complaint thought to be what was it i said to you, you did not follow me the speaker only wants to share their inner state, but the listener hears it as reproach. the couplet turns on a gap between intention and reception: honest expression becomes “gila” in the other’s mind. its emotional core is the pain of being misunderstood, where even plain words fail to reach the heart.

hamare shahr ke logon ka ab ahwal itna hai kabhi akhbar padh lena kabhi akhbar ho jaana

haal hamara puchhne wale kya batlaen sab achchha hai

na mujh ko kahne ki taqat kahun to kya ahwal na us ko sunne ki fursat kahun to kis se kahun the couplet captures a double bind of grief: the speaker is too drained to put suffering into words, yet even if words come, the intended listener is unavailable. “power to speak” and “leisure to listen” become metaphors for emotional capacity and attention. the result is isolation—pain remains locked inside, turning longing into silence.

'ghaalib' tera ahwal suna denge hum un ko wo sun ke bula len ye ijara nahin karte the speaker is willing to send his suffering as a message, hoping it might soften the beloved. yet the beloved’s pride and emotional restraint are so strong that even hearing his state won’t lead to an invitation. the couplet captures longing mixed with resignation: a faith in words, and a doubt in their power to move an unyielding heart.

ahwal kya bayan main karun hae ai tabib hai dard us jagah ki jahan ka nahin ilaj

ahwal dekh kar meri chashm-e-pur-ab ka dariya se aaj tut gaya dil habab ka

hamare zahiri ahwal par na ja hum log qayam apne khad-o-khal mein nahin karte
