Bijli

Lightening is a strong manifestation of nature. In poetry, it is used as a metaphor for heart-shaking sound, burning the birds’ abodes, and rendering them homeless. This applies to the beloved’s behavior as well who ravages the hapless lover. Lightening, used in a variety of contexts, has emerged as an interesting concept through classical Urdu poetry. Here are some verses to show that.

idhar falak ko hai zid bijliyan girane ki udhar hamein bhi hai dhun aashiyan banane ki

darta hun aasman se bijli na gir pade sayyaad ki nigah su-e-ashiyan nahin the speaker trembles at a dramatic danger from above, yet the real menace is elsewhere—or perhaps there is no immediate hunter at all. the contrast shows how anxiety can latch onto grand, distant threats while missing what is actually aimed at us. “lightning” becomes a metaphor for unpredictable fate, and the “hunter” for an expected enemy who, ironically, isn’t looking. the emotional core is helplessness before unseen or misunderstood danger.

mumkin nahin chaman mein donon ki zid ho puri ya bijliyan rahengi ya aashiyan rahega

ab bijliyon ka khauf bhi dil se nikal gaya khud mera aashiyan meri aahon se jal gaya the dread of lightning, in my heart, no longer survives, my nest is now reduced to ashes, by my burning sighs

bijli giregi sehn-e-chaman mein kahan kahan kis shakh-e-gulistan pe mera aashiyan nahin
