Hasrat

Once our desires are fulfilled the craving, or longing for the desired object stops. It is the non-fulfillment of desire that takes us to appreciate the real meaning of craving. It is quite, naturally, a subject for poetry. Urdu poets have been naturally inclined towards appropriating this subject with respects to lovers. We have a small selection for you to read and appreciate the layers of meaning behind craving and longing.

hazaron khwahishen aisi ki har khwahish pe dam nikle bahut nikle mere arman lekin phir bhi kam nikle i have a thousand yearnings , each one afflicts me so many were fulfilled for sure, not enough although the couplet captures the endlessness of human wanting: desires are so overpowering that each seems life-draining. even when some dreams are fulfilled, satisfaction remains out of reach, because the heart keeps multiplying new demands. the metaphor of “breath leaving” intensifies the emotional weight of longing and exhaustion.

in hasraton se kah do kahin aur ja basen itni jagah kahan hai dil-e-dagh-dar mein tell all my desires to go find another place in this scarred heart alas there isn't enough space the speaker addresses their own “hasratein” (unfulfilled desires) as if they were people occupying space. the heart is portrayed as already stained with pain—so full of wounds that it cannot hold any new cravings. the emotional core is exhaustion: sorrow has crowded the inner world, leaving no capacity for further yearning.

insan ki khwahishon ki koi intiha nahin do gaz zamin bhi chahiye do gaz kafan ke baad

kuchh nazar aata nahin us ke tasawwur ke siwa hasrat-e-didar ne aankhon ko andha kar diya save visions of her, nothing comes to mind the longing for her sight surely turned me blind

sab khwahishen puri hon 'faraaz' aisa nahin hai jaise kai ashaar mukammal nahin hote

baad marne ke bhi chhodi na rifaqat meri meri turbat se lagi baithi hai hasrat meri even after death my love did not forsake at my grave my desires kept a steady wake

yar pahlu mein hai tanhai hai kah do nikle aaj kyun dil mein chhupi baithi hai hasrat meri my love beside me, solitude, tell them to play a part why do my desires cower hidden in my heart

ek bhi khwahish ke hathon mein na mehndi lag saki mere jazbon mein na dulha ban saka ab tak koi

mai-kade ko ja ke dekh aaun ye hasrat dil mein hai zahid us mitti ki ulfat meri aab-o-gil mein hai
